Melanie Trejo
California State University, Long Beach
Melanie grew up watching her parents make sacrifices to give her the opportunities they didn’t have. Her father works two jobs to support the family. Her mother, unable to work, encouraged Melanie to pursue every academic goal within reach. For Melanie, graduating from college will be more than a personal milestone, it will be a moment of pride for her entire family.
At school and in her community, Melanie is known for stepping up. She’s been volunteering since she was a young teen, helping run city events like food drives and school supply giveaways. Every summer since she was 13, she’s volunteered more than 40 hours at her city’s public pool, assisting with swim classes and maintaining safe conditions as a junior lifeguard. She also led as captain of her school’s swim team, where she was known for encouraging others and helping teammates reach their full potential.
Melanie’s interest in forensic science grew from a desire to bring clarity, truth, and safety to people who need it most. She wants to work on cases that matter and contribute to making her community a safer place. This scholarship gives her the chance to move forward with confidence—and reminds her that her hard work, leadership, and resilience are seen and supported. At Artesia High School, Beatriz was known for her gentle leadership and steady work ethic. She served as treasurer of the Latino Culture Club, helped organize cultural events, and volunteered at her church. She also supported young students through the Migrant Education Program, where she gained hands-on experience tutoring and assisting in classrooms.
Her teachers describe her as reliable, thoughtful, and deeply compassionate. She quietly earns the trust of her peers and leads through example. Whether crafting piñatas for friends or guiding younger students through lessons, she brings joy and dedication to everything she does.
Beatriz will begin her studies in education at Cal State Long Beach this fall. She hopes to become the kind of teacher who helps students feel seen and supported. She is already well on her way.
