Gustavo learned the power of communication and perseverance at an early age. When his mother experienced a stroke, he began helping her communicate with therapists, nurses, and family members. What began as a responsibility at home grew into an ability to connect people, build trust, and help others feel understood.

During his first years at Downey High School, Gustavo struggled with his confidence after receiving hurtful comments from classmates. Determined to grow, he joined JROTC and found a community that challenged him to become a stronger leader. His instructor selected him to serve as First Class Sergeant, a role in which he supported, trained, and guided 34 cadets. Through that experience, Gustavo learned how to communicate clearly, resolve problems, and lead with respect.

Gustavo also played on the boys soccer team for three years and earned multiple Most Improved Player awards. He received repeated Dean’s List honors and a JROTC award in recognition of his commitment. Outside of his own classes, he volunteered as a translator in an English Language Development classroom, helping students communicate with their teacher and feel more connected at school.

Gustavo is attending California State University, Los Angeles to pursue his interests in business management and entrepreneurship. He entered college with greater confidence, a strong sense of responsibility, and a desire to use his leadership skills to create opportunities for others.
